Are You Young At Heart?

18th August 2008

By MELANY KARRMICHAEL

Age has nothing to do with years - age is simply a state of mind!

There are old ladies or men of twenty-five and young women or men of sixty-five. Being truly young depends not on the lack of wrinkles on your face or the lack of grey hairs on your head, but on the attitude of your mind. The youngest person I know in my home county of Yorkshire is nearly ninety-one and at more than twice my age, he really puts me to shame! Starting each day with stretching exercises, he is active in the community, belongs to two clubs, socialises regularly at his local pub, travels around the countryside, helps wherever he can and always has a smile on his face. In short, he's just been too busy to grow old!

No matter what the weather, the young at heart go out to meet life head-on and enjoy it, instead of waiting in front of their television sets for it to come to them. They lead full, busy lives and are interested in everything that's going on around them - in new people, new things, new ideas and new experiences.

It's courting old age to sink into a rut. However comfortable that rut may be, it will inevitably become narrow and dull. Your personality and interests will shrink to its dimensions. The old people of twenty-five are those who have allowed themselves to become slaves to boredom, inactivity or self-pity; those who do nothing to change a dull job, to add colour and character to cheerless surroundings or to find new friends. Their wasted talents and energies have soured into discontent.

Those ladies and gentlemen who've reached middle age have the best excuse for feeling a little worn around the edges. If you've devoted all your energies to the family for the last twenty years or have just survived a messy divorce, it's not easy to pick up old interests when you suddenly find yourself alone. Time will soon get the better of you if you sit back and feel sorry for yourself. Don't let it! Stir up some of those hobbies or find a few new ones. Try joining your local gym or take a dance or cooking course. You'll soon find yourself caught up in the exciting whirl of a satisfying new life.

Some of the liveliest people in the country are well past their seventies. Take a tip from them - keep pace with the world around you and you'll never have time to grow old or bored!
