Boris And The Babe

The news on Tuesday of Boris Becker's engagement to the much younger Sandy Meyer-Wölden came as a bombshell to everyone! Boris has always been cagey and reserved whenever a member of the press dares to ask him questions about his love life, but this is a new level of secrecy even for him. Not that long ago, the tennis star was spotted getting along very well with his ex on holiday, which made everyone assume that there'd be a reconciliation. Boris' reluctance to talk about his private life inevitably causes wild speculation and gossip, but this year Boris has insisted several times that he was definitely single and was happy being single. During a recent television interview, Sandy also claimed to be single, but added that she had nothing against falling in love, if and when it happened.

As the daughter of Boris' former adviser and friend, Sandy practically grew up with the Becker family and even worked as their nanny when she was in her teens. She is a very good friend of Barbara Becker and they have been seen dressed in similar outfits and holding hands during a shopping tour. The German press seem to like the idea that Barbara has possibly been grooming Sandy for years to appeal to and please Boris. Whatever the case, Barbara seems to have put her seal of approval on the relationship. Most ex-wives would be devastated to discover that their ex-husbands were engaged to a younger woman, especially if that someone was like a daughter to them, but Barbara and Boris have always had a good relationship and remained friends for the sake of the children. Barbara is extremely tolerant and says if you have enough self-control and learn to apologise or sometimes just keep quiet, it can work.

During a programme about her newfound success as a jewellery designer in New York, Sandy and her friends confided, amid a lot of giggling and girl talk, that she already had a lot of celebrity customers. One of the girls even mentioned Boris' name, but they gave no hint that there was more between him and Sandy, even though they must already have been a couple by then.

Sandy's best friend and colleague, Sue Chang, says that she probably knows Sandy better than anyone else and that she is really happy for her. She didn't want to say exactly when she had found out about the engagement, but confirmed that it is definitely serious. Sue said that Boris is a wonderful person and that he is the love of Sandy's life. Later in the interview, Sue commented that Sandy is very independent and that her work means everything to her. Apparently she is very, very passionate about her work, but Sue refused to comment when asked if that meant that she was more passionate about her work than men.

Immediately after the announcement, rumours spread like wildfire that they must be planning a shotgun wedding. Someone from the press even managed to dig out a few photos where Sandy had her hand on her stomach, but this has been emphatically denied. Although they are both used to the media circus, Sandy and Boris are keeping a low profile at the moment and all we can do now is to wait in breathless anticipation for the wedding or baby photos – whichever come first!
