Business tycoon Sir Tom Hunter honoured by university
25th November 2009
Business tycoon Sir Tom Hunter is to receive an honorary degree from Edinburgh University in recognition of his philanthropy. He will receive his Honorary Degree of Doctor honoris causa in a ceremony at the McEwan Hall on Wednesday
Sir Tom sold his first business, Sports Division, for £290m in 1998 at the age of 37 and was named as Scotland's first home-grown billionaire in 2007.
He has donated millions to good causes through his Hunter Foundation.
A large chunk of Sir Tom's fortune has been lost during the financial crisis, and he was overtaken as Scotland's richest man in the latest Sunday Times Rich List by Jim McColl, head of Glasgow engineering firm Clyde Blowers.
