Change Your Mood With Meditation
16th September 2008
Meditation can help you to control your emotions, discipline your mind, solve problems and even overcome illness. It is a good way to teach you to take control of your restless conscious mind, reprogram your subconscious mind and open up a channel to your super conscious. Unfortunately, a lot of people use incorrect techniques or simply have no idea what to do. Before you start meditation though, you need to learn how to move your mood simply by moving your eyes.
The mood we are in has a lot to do with the way we perceive the world around us. When we are feeling happy and well we tend to focus outwards, taking the environment in through our eyes and using our physical senses. But when we are depressed or negative, we lower our eyes and reflect instead on our negative thoughts and problems. A simple solution when you are feeling down is to try to focus your attention upward. Pay attention to your surroundings and you will begin to feel more optimistic.
Try a simple exercise and you will be amazed at its effect. Sitting comfortable, straight-backed chair, place your feet flat on the floor and rest your arms on the armrests. We often feel like we’ve got a thousand thoughts rushing through our minds, so close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and try to think of nothing at all. Open your eyes and look down, letting your head fall forward onto your chest. In this position, your mind tends to focus on the sub-conscious and you will feel reflective and thoughtful. Close your eyes again before lifting your head and looking straight ahead. You will immediately take more notice of the physical world around you and will feel alert and observant.
For the final position, tilt your head backwards and look up. This should help you to focus on higher spiritual matters or the realm beyond the physical. Some call this the third eye - a spot about one inch above the brow line and one inch inside the surface of the forehead. Focus on this point by looking upwards and inwards. Once you have got used to the above positions, it won’t be long before you find yourself using them in everyday situations.
The most important thing to remember is to try and keep your mind clear of debris at all times. Over a lifetime we all collect a lot of baggage in the form of disappointments, fears, criticism, inhibitions, uncertainties, etc. and we need to work through these negative influences and clear the part for more important information. Anger, hate, envy, fear, jealousy, worry and noise are like poison to our minds and we need to direct our mental energy in order to find out our try true capabilities and focus on what we are trying to achieve.
