City shops project back on track
28th October 2009
Stalled development work on a £200m shopping centre in Wakefield is back on track after developers struck a new deal to complete the project.
The scheme was stopped at the halfway stage earlier this year after developer Trinity Walk Wakefield Ltd went into administration.
It has now been taken over by a new consortium with work expected to be completed by Easter 2011.
The shopping centre will include Sainsburys and Debenhams.
The consortium now leading the development is made up of Shepherd Construction, Sovereign Land and AREA Property Partners.
York-based Shepherd Construction will restart building work on the 550sq ft centre in January.
A spokesman for the company said the concept and plans for the centre remained largely unchanged.
Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: "This is fantastic news and we are now looking forward to seeing this important city centre development completed, which will breathe new life into our economy."
