Dowie stars as Everton sink Chelsea
22nd March 2010
England striker Natasha Dowie bagged a brace as Everton won 5-2 at Chelsea in the Women's Premier League. The win saw the Toffees leapfrog the Blues and move into third in the table.
Leeds Carnegie also moved ahead of Chelsea thanks to a 4-0 victory at Millwall Lionesses, with Ellen White hitting a hat-trick.
In the basement battle, Katie Anderton's goal gave second-from-bottom Blackburn Rovers a 1-0 win at rock-bottom Bristol Academy.
Chelsea 2-5 Everton
Rebecca Jane scored her third goal in four games to give Chelsea a ninth-minute lead.
But Jill Scott equalised within 60 seconds and then Dowie's goals either side of half-time put the visitors in charge.
Michelle Hinnigan effectively wrapped up victory with Everton's fourth goal in the 65th minute, though Dani Buet hit a 72nd-minute consolation effort.
Toffees captain Fara Williams completed the scoring with a penalty 11 minutes from time.
The win took the Merseysiders level on points with second-placed Arsenal, though the Gunners have a game in hand.
Millwall Lionesses 0-4 Leeds Carnegie
Striker White celebrated her first call-up to the England senior squad - for Thursday's game against Austria - with her second hat-trick of the campaign.
The three goals took her season's tally to 18, while Mel Sutcliffe claimed her first to help give Leeds a sixth win in seven league outings.
They are now just two points behind Arsenal and Everton, with a game in hand on the Toffees, and only three points adrift of leaders Sunderland with six games in hand.
Bristol Academy 0-1 Blackburn Rovers
Bristol bossed the early stages but went behind when Anderton struck her 12th goal of the season after 28 minutes.
Blackburn gradually took control after taking the lead and just about deserved the win that lifted them five points clear of Academy at the foot of the table.
