Faiths unite to promote relations
17th November 2009
A multicultural suburb in Sheffield is hosting the city's first interfaith week, which aims to strengthen relations and awareness. Religious communities gathered in Burngreave for a wide programme of events including a tree planting ceremony, prayers, music and song.
The Bishop of Sheffield, the Right Reverend Dr Steven Croft, was due to join the celebrations.
Interfaith week is running across England between 15 and 21 November.
Burngreave has become a focus for interfaith activities for a number of years with the creation of a multi-faith chapel and library at Burngreave Ashram.
Interfaith week has been co-ordinated by the Inter Faith Network for the UK and the government's Communities and Local Government department.
It is designed to teach others about the different faith communities in the city and increase understanding of religious and non-religious beliefs.
