Gebre Gebremariam set for Edinburgh cross country event
30th November 2009
World champion Gebre Gebremariam will attempt to add the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country to his list of titles on 9 January. The 25-year-old Ethiopian, who won silver at the event in 2008, is the first big name to sign up for the race.
Gebremariam opened the season on Saturday with a win at the IAAF Cross Country meeting by outsprinting Eduardo Mbengani in Oeiras, Portugal.
The Edinburgh race will be broadcast live on BBC television and online.
More than 2,500 runners of various ages and abilities participated in last year's event at Holyrood Park.
Britain's Andy Baddeley defended his men's 4km title, while compatriot Stephanie Twell ran well but finished fourth behind Kenya's Linet Masai in the women's event.
Gebremariam recently took gold at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Oman.
