Hundreds of Animals Left to Suffer in Leeds
01st May 2008
The RSPCA using a week long campaign to raise the awareness of the cruelty inflicted on animals in Leeds.
The campaign includes a picture of a recently rescued puppy that was found dumped in Birstall near Batley.
The puppy was part of a litter of five that was discovered by a member of the public on Field Head Lane.
All the puppies were playing in a field near a footpath and it was obvious that they had been dumped.
An RSPCA inspector said, 'It's shocking that anyone could abandon any animal in this way, especially such young puppies.
'They were all in good physical condition, which suggested that they had once belonged to someone.'
Figures released showed that over 30,000 wild, exotic, farm and domestic animals were badly treated last year.
All the animals were rescued from either dangerous or distressing situations.
The 30,000 abused animals were from the north of England and shockingly these figures are set to rise.
The cases of cruelty to animals have continued to rise in just over four months of 2008.
The RSPCA have already rescued over 700 abandoned animals across the region.
The society highlighted two cases of animal abandonment in the Leeds and West Yorkshire.
One case last year saw a dog thrown out of a car onto a lay-by and dumped along the M621.
Another case involved a nine-week old German Shepherd puppy dumped on Fernfield Terrace in Halifax.
The puppy was found taped up in a cardboard nappy box by a member of the public.
The north regional superintendent said, 'The RSPCA works around the clock to rescue thousands of animals every year and 2007 was no exception.'
