Leeds Gets Interactive City Guide
19th May 2008
Leeds has become the first city in the world to get a virtual city guide thanks to the recent launch of LeedsCast, which is an interactive guide that can be downloaded to mobile phones via Bluetooth.
Residents and tourists alike can use the guide to access useful information about Leeds including restaurant details, news headlines and taxi firm numbers. It also provides offers that can be redeemed at a variety of city centre retailers, as well as walking directions. Once you have downloaded the information you require, it remains accessible from wherever you are.
The guide can be easily downloaded from a number of LeedsCast zones that are located in various locations around the city centre, including Millennium Square, the bus station, the train station, Leeds Visitor Centre and Leeds Central Library. While there are just nine LeedsCast zones at the moment, more will be launched in the coming months.
Content for the LeedsCast system is being provided by Marketing Leeds, which is the city’s official body for business, leisure and education. Deborah Green, who is chief executive of Marketing Leeds, believes that LeedsCast will be “vital” for people in the city. She said: “Leeds is proud to be hosting the world’s first virtual city guide, and we’re really excited that through this technology we can open up new channels of communication with people who come into the city. For visitors it will be a vital source of instant information, while for people who live and work in Leeds it can provide details of upcoming events, useful contact telephone numbers, regular news updates and exciting offers. LeedsCast represents a new era in location-based city marketing.”
Cath Follin, Leeds City Centre manager, also approves of the scheme. She said: “This puts a whole host of information at the touch of a button.”
