Secret Eco-town Plan For Leeds

01st May 2008

A secret plan has been uncovered of a scheme to make a leafy south Leeds suburb into a new eco-town called 'The Greens.'

The scheme would see more than 9,000 homes built on mostly registered green belt land in Leeds and include Rothwell, Oulton and Woodlesford.

Two private companies the Isle of Man-based Oulton Hall Estates and Yorkshire firm GMI Property Company Ltd submitted the plans to the government, hoping to get permission granted for the large-scale housing scheme.

The proposals fro the site include 9,000 carbon neutral homes across an 800-acre site.

Sonar panel will be installed on all the new properties with the inclusion of wind turbines on all the sites.

They also propose to develop the all the surrounding land around Oulton Hall grounds.

And also include the expansion of the village of Carlton to at least three times its original size and doubling the size of Oulton.

There will also be an introduction of six new schools in the designated areas that will include both primary and secondary schools.

The final big change in the plans is to dig up the A642 Leeds-Wakefield Road and make it into a dual carriageway.

The report also purports that a giant 'bubble' sculpture will be, 'An Emblem of the new town's pioneering spirit.'

An 'expression of interest' document was submitted to the Department for Communities and the local government in the autumn of last year.

It is stated that the two companies Oulton Hall Estates and GMI are already in control of the 800 acres of the land needed for the scheme.

If permission is granted for the proposed sites will only initially build 5,000 houses, with plans to increase the number to 9,000 in total.
