'Tweet potholes' appeal launched

22nd January 2010

Birmingham council are asking motorists to let them know about potholes via micro-blogging site Twitter. The longest period of sub-zero temperatures for 30 years has opened up fissures in the roads as ice expands and creates cracks.

In the new scheme, drivers can Twitter the city council's press office with pothole locations, details of which are then forwarded to the Highways team.

"It just makes sense to use it," said Council spokesman Geoff Coleman.

He added: "We have so many roads in the city that we like to have the help of anyone who uses them. "

Birmingham has about 9,100 roads stretching to 1,555 miles (2,500km).

The total repair bill from the freezing weather is still unknown.
