Women Race for Life in Leeds

19th May 2008

Nearly 8,000 ladies ran in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Temple Newsam, Leeds. A number of women chose to wear pink fancy dress to complete the race, which raised thousands for the cancer charity.

Many runners were completing the race in memory of friends and family who had died from the disease and wore signs to show who they were running for. Those running included friends and relatives of June Rowling who died last July aged just 48 from a rare form of sarcoma. June left behind her husband Philip and children Emily and Elliot, as well as plenty more friends and relatives – many of whom were among the 14-strong team running in her memory.

Those running for June included her sister Carolyn Green and best friend Bev Myers. Bev said that her friend was a charitable person, she said: “June actually raised thousands of pounds for charities through Mirfield Ladies Circle.” Carolyn was also keen to talk about her late sister’s charitable side, she said: “She was always a doer. She had even done a couple of these races before she got ill.”

21-year-old trainee teacher Alice Patterson was racing in memory of her mother Christine who died from breast cancer when Alice was just eight years old. Meanwhile Claire Kirby ran alongside her cousin in memory of her mother and father-in-law. She said: “There's a great atmosphere. We want to raise as much as possible... hopefully £800 between us.”

Race for Life organiser Jenny Key said that she was thrilled with the way the event had gone. She said: “It was absolutely fantastic. The weather stayed out for us, it was dry, there was a really good turnout and everybody finished. It was a great day.”
